How Often Should I Clean My Air Ducts?

How Often Should I Clean My Air Ducts?

Clean Air & Mold Prevention

If we look at the conditions of most air ducts in homes these days, we’d probably realize that people don’t seem to ask the question, “how often should I clean my air ducts?”. In fact, some homeowners don’t even realize that air ducts have to be cleaned first!

So what’s the short answer to this question? The answer is that you ought to clean your home’s air ducts at least every five years. But that’s a generic answer, as the more accurate response will depend on how dirty your air ducts get. Factors that will affect the cleanliness of those air ducts include the climate in your location and whether or not you have pets.

You may also want to clean your air ducts more frequently if you have asthma or allergies. Instead of cleaning every five years, you may have to do some cleaning every two years or so.

But you don’t have to guess how dirty your air ducts are. It’s a rule of thumb that you need to replace your HVAC air filters every 2 to 3 months. When you’re doing this, you may as well check for signs that your air ducts are getting dirty enough to need a cleaning.

These signs include seeing lots of debris when looking down the ducts or if your house suffers from significant dust buildup. These are signs that you need to clean your air ducts right away. Other signs that signal an immediate air duct clean-up include having respiratory problems, a strange increase in your energy bill, or signs of rodents in your air ducts.

If there’s water in your ducts, you may have a serious problem, and your air ducts may have mold.

If any of these are observed, clean your air ducts right now!
